For an engineering group, the corporate website is where tender evaluators, procurement teams and potential hires check credentials before they pick up the phone. Many of these sites run on WordPress, are built once and then left alone. Over time plugins pile up, updates are skipped and the site slows down, until it is slow, insecure and quietly losing enquiries.
This group's site had 27 plugins, nine of them out of date, and a theme that had not been updated in three years. It scored 31 on mobile PageSpeed, took 5.6 seconds to load on a phone and had gone down twice in the past year, once after a malware injection. Bounce rate on mobile was 71%, and the site produced about 18 enquiries a month from its contact and tender forms.
| Metric | Month 0 |
|---|---|
| Mobile PageSpeed score | 31 |
| Mobile load time (largest content paint) | 5.6s |
| Uptime | 98.1% |
| Out-of-date plugins | 9 |
| Mobile bounce rate | 71% |
| Monthly website enquiries | 18 |
We took full backups, set up a staging copy of the site and audited every plugin, script and image, recording what each one did and whether it was still needed.
Working on a staging copy meant the live site never broke during the work. The audit showed that many plugins were doing jobs the theme or a single tool could handle. The staging copy also gave the group's IT team a safe place to review changes before anything went live.
We removed 14 plugins that were unused or duplicated, updated the rest, cleaned the remains of the earlier malware, and added a firewall, login protection and daily off-site backups.
Every unused plugin is a possible way in for attackers. Fewer, updated plugins made the site both faster and safer. The firewall also blocked thousands of login attempts in the first month alone, which showed how exposed the old site had been.
We compressed and resized images, moved them to modern formats, set up page caching and a content delivery network, deferred non-essential scripts and replaced a heavy slider on the homepage.
Large images and scripts loading all at once were the main reasons the site took 5.6 seconds on a phone. Fixing them brought load time under two seconds. The homepage slider alone had been loading more than four megabytes of images before anything else could appear.
We tested every page, form and download on mobile and desktop, checked that tender and contact forms reached the right inboxes, then pushed the changes live with no downtime.
A faster site is no use if a form silently fails. Testing every enquiry path protected the leads the site was there to collect. The tender form, which brings in the most valuable enquiries, got extra testing with large file attachments.
We moved the site onto a monthly maintenance plan with weekly updates, uptime monitoring, security scans and a short monthly report on speed and enquiries.
Speed and security fade without upkeep. Regular maintenance kept the site at its new standard instead of slowly sliding back. The monthly report also gave management a simple view of the site's health without needing to understand the technical detail.
Three months after launch, the site scored 89 on mobile PageSpeed and loaded in 1.9 seconds on a phone. Uptime reached 99.98%, every plugin was up to date and there were no further security incidents. Mobile bounce rate fell from 71% to 52%, and the site produced 27 enquiries a month instead of 18. The group's business development team also reported that tender evaluators no longer mentioned the site being slow or hard to use. Because maintenance is now routine, the site is kept at this standard each month instead of drifting back.

Audit, clean-up, security, speed work and testing, then a zero-downtime launch.
Weekly updates and monitoring kept the score above 85 as enquiries began to rise.
A mobile PageSpeed score of 89 and 27 enquiries a month.
Removing 14 plugins that were unused or duplicated did as much for speed as any optimisation tool. Every plugin should earn its place.
One malware incident cost more time and trust than a year of maintenance. Weekly updates, backups and monitoring keep that from happening again.
A corporate site is often the first check a buyer or evaluator makes. Cutting mobile load time to under two seconds kept more of them on the site long enough to get in touch.
