The Challenge

The Starting Point

People rarely search for storage until they need it: a renovation, a move between flats, a stint overseas or a business that has run out of space. Searches like self storage singapore and storage space singapore are dominated by a few large operators, and for anyone searching on a phone the local map results matter more than the blue links. Google decides who appears in that map partly from how consistently a business is described across the rest of the web: directories, map apps, listing sites and articles. A multi-site operator with messy details across those sites looks less certain to Google than a single site with clean ones.

This operator had four facilities and a messy history. One facility had moved two years earlier, but the old industrial address still appeared on 14 directories. Several listings carried a phone number the company had dropped when it switched to a central hotline, and access hours differed from site to site. We found 63 listings across the web: 19 were correct, 38 had wrong or inconsistent details and 6 were duplicates. The site had 29 referring domains. Only 1 of the 4 facilities appeared in the local map top 3 for storage searches in its area. Google profiles produced about 310 calls and direction requests a month, and the business logged 44 unit rental enquiries.

What We Did

What We Did

Phase 1, Month 1

Auditing Every Listing for All Four Facilities

We searched for each facility's name, every phone number the business had ever used and every address, old and new. We checked the main Singapore business directories, map and navigation apps, moving and relocation guides, property portals with home service sections, and expat guides. The result was a sheet of 63 listings with what each one said and what it should say. We also agreed one exact format for each facility's name, address, phone number and hours.

For a business with several locations, small differences add up. A listing with the old address sends people to an empty unit, and it also tells Google the business details are unreliable. The audit gave us a full picture before anything was changed.

Phase 2, Months 1 to 2

Cleaning Up 38 Listings and 6 Duplicates

We corrected all 38 listings with wrong details, claiming the ones that allowed it and using the support process on the rest. Six duplicates were merged or removed, including the old facility address, which had its own listing on two map apps. All four Google Business Profiles were checked against the same format, with matching categories, hours, photos and a short description of each facility. Apple Maps, Bing Places and Waze were updated to match.

Clean-up is slow, unglamorous work, and it is the part most businesses skip. It was also where the first ranking movement came from. Two facilities moved up in the map results within weeks of the duplicates being removed.

Phase 3, Months 2 to 4

Building 52 New Citations

With the existing listings fixed, we added the four facilities to directories and listing sites where they were missing. That came to 52 new local citations across general business directories, relocation and moving resources, renovation and home services listings, and student and expat housing guides, which matter because many storage customers are students between semesters or families relocating. Every citation used the agreed format and pointed to the right facility page.

Good citation building is not about volume. Fifty-two accurate listings on relevant sites did more than hundreds on directories nobody uses. Each one confirmed the same details for the same facility, which is what the local map results reward.

Phase 4, Months 3 to 5

Reclaiming Unlinked Mentions

We found 27 articles and pages that mentioned the business by name without linking to it: decluttering guides, property blogs, renovation checklists and a few round-ups of storage prices. We wrote to each site owner with a short, polite note and the correct facility link. Nineteen of the 27 added a link. We did not buy links, write guest posts or run outreach campaigns. Every link came from a page that already talked about the client.

Unlinked mentions are the easiest authority a business can earn, because the site owner has already chosen to write about you. These 19 links, along with the linked citations, took the site from 29 to 71 referring domains, and helped the four local SEO facility pages rank better as well.

Phase 5, Months 5 to 6

Keeping the Details Clean

We set up a simple quarterly check for the operations team: search each facility's name and phone number, compare against the master sheet, and fix anything that has drifted. We also tracked calls and direction requests per facility each week, so the team could see which site was gaining and why.

Listings drift. Directories copy each other, and one wrong edit can spread to a dozen sites within months. A short routine check protects the work far more cheaply than another clean-up later.

The Results

The Results

By Month 6 the operator had 109 listings with correct details, up from 19, and no duplicate or outdated listings left live. Referring domains grew from 29 to 71. All 4 facilities now appeared in the local map top 3 for storage searches in their area, up from 1. Calls and direction requests from the Google profiles rose from 310 to 515 a month, and unit rental enquiries rose from 44 to 67. The six months covered off page seo services only: the website content and the ad budget did not change.

Key Takeaways

What We Learned

Fix what is wrong before you add anything new

If you run a business with several branches in Singapore, start with the listings you already have. An old address or phone number on a dozen sites costs you visits today and weakens every new listing you add.

Pick listing sites your customers actually use

Relocation guides, student housing pages and home service directories were worth more than generic directories because they matched why people need storage. Relevance beat quantity.

Ask the people who already mention you

Sites that have written about your business are the easiest links you will ever get. A short, friendly note turned 19 of 27 mentions into links without any paid placements.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A citation is any listing of your business name, address and phone number on another site, such as a directory or map app. For businesses that depend on local map results, consistent citations still help Google trust your details. The clean-up of wrong listings often matters more than adding new ones.
For four facilities it took about two months to correct everything, because some directories only update through their support teams. New citations and mention outreach ran for another three months. Most of the ranking movement showed from Month 2 onward.
Link building is one part of it. This project focused on listings, consistent business details and reclaiming mentions that already existed. No links were bought and no guest posts were written.
The cost depends mainly on the number of locations and how messy the existing listings are. We quote after the audit, once we know how many listings need fixing and how many new ones make sense.
